Beyond the Milk Line

A transformative initiative, turning struggling farmers into thriving entrepreneurs. A tale of economic upliftment, symbolizing a beacon of hope fostering community development in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh

Roopdas Bairagi, once a struggling farmer, is now the secretary of milk center in Tarwariya village, Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, playing a pivotal role in ensuring its efficient operation.

His day starts at 6 AM, and his responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness, washing milk cans, and organizing the milk collection process. The milk collection, approximately 120 liters per day, takes place from 7 AM to 9:30 AM. Subsequently, the collected milk is transported to the city's milk plant.

Roopdas's journey reflects the transformative impact of the milk center initiative, turning his life around from a struggling farmer to a key player in the economic development of the village.

Hygiene Practices at the Milk Center

The dairy's meticulous hygiene practices are crucial for maintaining milk quality. With two containers always in rotation, a rigorous washing routine precedes each milk collection.

The dairy recognizes that maintaining cleanliness is not just a procedural formality but a safeguard against spoilage, ensuring the integrity of the collected milk.

This meticulous process is vital as unwashed containers could lead to bacterial contamination, potentially spoiling the fresh milk.

This commitment to hygiene not only upholds the quality standards but also safeguards the livelihoods of the farmers, ensuring that their hard work in milk production is duly preserved and translated into sustainable income.

Pursuit of Dairy Excellence

Roopdas's dedication to cleanliness goes beyond mere duty at the milk center; it reflects the reverence he imparts to his home's place of worship.

Serving as a devoted custodian, he scrupulously cleanses the milk center, elevating it's sanctity to that of his own sacred haven.

Roopdas seamlessly integrates his spiritual principles with his professional ethos, embodying exemplary commitment and diligence in the dairy community.

Here, purity isn't merely a ritual; it's a way of life, and Roopdas stands as a shining example of such unwavering devotion.

Fat-Checking in Dairy Delights: Ensuring Quality in Every Drop

Preciseness defines the process of determining milk fat content: a meticulous sampling of 100 grams from each farmer guarantees accurate fat percentage measurement. The prevailing market value for milk, factoring in fat content, stands firm at Rs. 7.20 per unit. Noteworthy is the premium commanded by full-fat milk, reaching an impressive Rs. 72.50 per litre, underscoring the market's high regard for elevated fat content. In stark contrast, toned milk, with a reduced fat percentage, maintains a standard rate of Rs. 30 per litre.

An intriguing trend surfaces as 3-4 farmers secure premium rates for their milk, hinting at the recognition of exceptional quality and, perhaps, extraordinary fat content. This quality-centric approach not only benefits the farmers but also ensures consumers access top-notch dairy products at a fair market price.

Harmonious Collaboration: Saanchi Dairy and Milk Center Unite for Quality

Every drop of milk meticulously measured and quality-checked at the center finds its way to Saanchi Dairy, a local dairy unit, marking the inception of a symbiotic relationship.

It unfolds as a harmonious integration, seamlessly blending local dairy production into a more expansive market landscape.

As the milk flows from the village to the city, this collaboration becomes a catalyst for economic upliftment, connecting farmers with a larger consumer base.

From Struggles to Stability

Roopdas Bairagi found himself at a crossroads where sustaining a family seemed like an insurmountable challenge. With the transformative initiative of the Milk Center and his dedication, Roopdas has not only become the secretary of the center but has also lifted a significant financial burden of his shoulders.

"The income from traditional farming was insufficient to sustain himself. "
Roopdas Bairagi

Roopdas's story is not just a personal triumph; it encapsulates the broader impact of dairy entrepreneurship in Tarwariya village.

The initiative of the milk center introduced by Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation ( LHWRF), in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), has not only empowered individual lives like Roopdas's but has also become a beacon of economic hope and sustainability for families within the community.

Kaleidoscope of Transformations

Sohan Singh's financial success

Sohan ventured into supplying milk 120 km from his village in Bhopal through the milk center.

Equipped with 7 buffaloes of his own and a bull provided by LHWRF, Sohan underwent a shift in mindset. Recognizing the bull's pivotal role in breeding, he embraced a newfound sense of self-reliance.

This venture evolved into a family undertaking, motivating his mother, brother, and nephew to participate in dairy farming. As a result, Sohan achieved financial success, earning a monthly income of Rs. 50,000 with savings amounting to Rs. 35,000, showcasing his dedication to sustainability. Having made an initial investment of Rs. 43,000, Sohan envisions expanding his dairy venture by acquiring 5 more buffaloes in the future.

Jagat Singh's commitment towards children's education

Jagat Singh, once toiling as agricultural labor, now directs his efforts toward the thriving milk center, bringing the fruits of his labor to the forefront. His day starts at 5 AM, dedicated to buffalo care, milking, and delivering the yield to the milk center.

Shifting from a singular focus on agriculture, Jagat diversified into livestock. He received a buffalo through LHWRF intervention, and subsequently expanded his herd by two more. His family of four, including his wife, son, and daughter, reaps the benefits from this evolving journey.

Post-intervention, Jagat, driven by a commitment towards his children's education, achieved more than just securing a livelihood. His son has become the first in their family to ever attend college, marking a significant milestone. Alongside this educational breakthrough, they also acquired a motor bike and a bicycle, concrete symbols of progress in their journey towards higher studies.
